For many years community employment agencies faced the challenges of marketing their services and the people they represented to the business sector. For the most part they were ill equipped; with little marketing or sales expertise, few resources and, for the most part, faced an uninformed and unreceptive audience. Business operators didn’t understand disability or why they should consider people who have a disability in their workplace.
Employment service operators learned that, given this lack of expertise and resources, the best way to reach employers was through the expertise of others. But the challenge was in finding champions – business leaders – who understood the issue and why people who have a disability should be included in the workforce and who were prepared to take on this cause. There were a few early champions like Gar Bauer of Loblaw Companies who worked diligently to develop strategies and programs that included people who have a disability in their grocery stores.

Monique Bateman is senior vice president, human resources for TD Canada Trust. She started her journey through the bank 29 years ago as a customer service representative at a Winnipeg branch. She also is chair of the Aboriginal Employee Subcommittee where she encourages and mentors Aboriginal team members.

The major US networks—NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox—were in Toronto last month as part of a recruitment campaign for more racial and ethnic diversity in primetime television. The 2-day casting call for minority talent is for network series to be produced in Canada. The networks will be traveling to Vancouver this month for the same purpose: to hire actors from Asian, African, Aboriginal, South Asian and Hispanic communities. The 4 networks will then share their lists of minority talent uncovered in Canada, including headshots and video introductions. The push for diversity came 3 years ago after the studios noticed primetime shows shot in BC had too few non-white faces...

For the disabled employee, the question in one's mind is how much assistance they can ask for before it becomes either a nuisance or an annoyance.
