Federal government to women: Go home! Part 2
BY IAN SUTTON
It isn’t a question of disillusion—since they weren’t expecting much—but groups advocating for working women at the low end of the income scale are getting more agitated about attitudes demonstrated by the party currently in power in Ottawa.

They’re also not yet totally persuaded they can trust the Liberals to do much better when it comes to issues directly affecting women in the workforce—particularly those living close to or below the poverty line—such as pay equity, child care and employment insurance.

They believe the government of Stephen Harper has no interest in recognizing the needs of working women on these issues, pointing out the Conservatives demonstrated their philosophy in last November’s economic statement and the federal budget, sweeping pay equity under the carpet...[ read more ]
FYI  Safe Harbour
A national diversity initiative aimed at creating more welcoming workplaces and communities.

Safe Harbour started in Nanaimo, BC after the city experienced some incidents of racism. “The community really spoke up and said, ‘Look, this is something that demands the attention of various members of the community, various stakeholders. Why don’t we collaborate and come together and develop something that will really work for all of us?’” Marsh explains... [ read more ]

VIP Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
The president of Canada Mortgage and Housing has two framed photos on her desk.

One is a family photo. The other shows her with the corporation's three employees who have Down Syndrome.

The latter is there for the days when Karen Kinsley gets bogged down in the nitty gritty financial details with which CMHC must concern itself. It reminds her that, at the end of the day, the organization is all about people and these are three -- Paul Knoll, Scott Harford and Heather Green -- of the special ones it employs through one of its several programs that encourage diversity in the workforce. ..[ read more ]

Why successful companies embrace diversity
BY KIM WOLFE
The companies that have been most successful in attracting and retaining diverse talent are those that have driven inclusiveness initiatives from the top down. Management in those companies understands that a diverse workforce improves the bottom line. “The CEO must believe in it and be vocal about it,” says Tom Fuller, general managing partner of Epsen Fuller/IMD International Search and Consulting.

Successful companies also ensure that managers at all levels are not just paying lip service to the concept. “If companies are not authentic, the backlash can be severe,” says Stéfan Danis, CEO & Chief Talent Officer of Mandrake executive search and consulting firm... [ read more ]
Equality and Diversity: Buy-in is the key
BY TIM HOLDEN

“But we operate in a sector with skills shortages.”
“Agencies try their best but they don’t have people on their books who want to work here.”
“Adverts just don’t work any more.”

These are excuses we hear a lot, often from employers offering the national minimum wage. We often use the following retort: “So give us the numbers—what is your employee split for gender, age, ethnicity and disability?”

Most employers are aware that there are not enough young, able-bodied, white men to meet all available vacancies. But few are measuring the numbers, whilst even fewer are doing anything proactive to attract under-represented groups... [ read more ]
