Smart small businesses today understand diversity is more than just a feel-good notion on a human resources poster. It is, in fact, crucial to doing business in a world whose populations, by virtue of speedy air travel and even speedier Internet service, become more interconnected by the day.
In the U.S. alone, the wide range of people involved in both the making and the consuming of products could include the Indian automotive engineer who is helping to take Ford to the next level; the African American statistician at a Silicon Valley startup; the 65-year-old disabled man who, instead of retiring, has just been promoted; the Gen Y child of immigrants from Central America who excels in Web marketing at Procter & Gamble; the gay woman who is the mother of two; and so on.
As consumers, they are all buying what your business sells—or ignoring it—depending on whether your company is as diverse as they are...

Thanks to his organization, newcomers now have an opportunity to restart their careers in positions similar to those they left behind and not just settle for jobs as cab drivers or custodians. “At the end of the day we’re trying to help make it better for newcomers,” Sutton adds. “And our jobseekers are really happy that there’s something out there now that can help them find more than just survival jobs.”....

Sinagpore
The National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School's Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organizations (CGIO) plans to track gender diversity in Singapore's boardrooms and publish the results for the public. The Singapore Board Diversity Index will provide comprehensive publicly available data measuring female participation on the country’s boards on an annual basis from a database managed by the CGIO. At present, 61.7% of Singapore firms do not have a single woman represented in their boardroom while 31% have just one female. Only 10 companies or 1.2% of all listed companies in Singapore had 3 or more women represented on their boards....
