It’s a debate that could last for decades. And may continue to divide Canadians: should immigration be drastically curtailed – if not totally abolished? Or is it the answer to the country’s growing labour shortage?

Two former diplomats both claim increased immigration is politically motivated by the major federal parties and simply contributes to the tax burden of Canadians and many of the country’s social and environmental ills—not to mention crime rates.

Their views are directly challenged, among others, by Anne Golden, president and CEO of the Conference Board of Canada, who says not only does this country urgently need to replenish its aging labour force through immigration, but new federal legislation aimed at tracking down the skilled immigrants our employers need is already starting to work... [ read more ]

France’s state broadcasting regulator the Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel (CSA) has attacked French television for its lack of diversity. A study by the CSA of a 500-hour week of programming on 16 of the country’s main channels showed that the visibility of minorities has progressed just over 1% in the past 9 years with individuals labeled as “non-white” representing only 14% of the faces on TV. CSA president Michel Boyon called the situation “unacceptable” and “intolerable in the France of 2008” and has promised to strictly enforce diversity quotas in the future...[ read more ]

Ahhhh, the ever changing world of recruitment. Remember the good old days? And I’m not talking about the low price of gas and candy, but the old days of recruiting when potential employees were beating down your door for jobs. When there were always plenty of fish in the job market sea.

Back then a single paragraph announcing a new job opening in a local newspaper landed dozens of qualified CVs on your desk.  Well, along with one-cent candy these days are gone. Now employers are running many different ads, offering signing bonuses and fighting for competitors by campaigning with bells and whistles to bring in high quality candidates. Despite these efforts, the local Canadian pool isn’t providing suitable options for the increasing number of available positions in high demand fields.

Competing with other employers in a job market of low applicant numbers for multiple job vacancies can become stressful. To get ahead, hiring managers need to start thinking outside of the normal recruiting box... [ read more ]

Dear Diversity@Work:
I am having a really difficult time adjusting to my first job in Canada.  It is so different for me that I am not sure that I am going to succeed and “fit in”.  In this job, I am frequently attending meetings and I don’t understand why they are conducted the way they are.

Things seem so regimented.  After we have exchanged a few superficial “how are you”s, the meeting begins.  Then in some of the other meetings that I attend in the office with my peers, the director is always asking us for feedback and suggestions.  This seems very strange to me.  Why would a high level manager want my recommendations? Shouldn’t they know what to do if they are in that position?

How to achieve real diversity in IT

If you’re ever feeling lonely, mention diversity in IT hiring. It’s certain to elicit some opinions, many of them quite passionate. IT historically sees itself as a diverse and non-traditional business function.  You’re likely to find different dress, styles of conversation, and different age groups in key positions in IT versus, say, corporate finance.  IT esteems the young genius slinging code or the hardware guru who can revive a piece of equipment long written off as dysfunctional, rather than the well-groomed suit with the Ivy League pedicure. IT points to its position on the forefront of outsourcing as another source of diversity, as teams in Boise and Bangalore work together across time zones and cultural barriers.
