Employers in their own interest must become better informed about the value of hiring and promoting Canadians with disabilities and eliminating barriers to their participation in the workplace, according to a recent study. But there’s also an obligation on the part of the labour movement itself to become more pro-active in getting that message across.

| DIVERSUS provides disability awareness training that says, among other things, reasonable adjustments such as an accessible website do not necessarily have to affect the employer’s resources or the way their business is operated. “The training we deliver is designed to meet the work and needs of the organization.” Lindsey Collumbell, a member of the Hands On media team explains. “We do not deliver ‘standard packages’ because every business and employer will differ, as well as any staff that acknowledge they have a disability.”...

A study on the state of diversity in the nation’s $31billion advertising industry shows that a “deeply-embedded racial bias” that creates barriers to advancement and pay for black professionals. The 73-page report, Research Perspective on Race and Employment in the Advertising Industry, concluded that ad agencies need to transform the current workplace culture to achieve “substantial, permanent change.” Key findings included that the racial pay gap is twice as large in advertising as in the overall labor market, an additional 7200 black managers or professionals need to be hired to bring the representation of African Americans up to 9.6%, and only 10% are likely to hold positions earning $100,000 or more annually.
