TOP2 steps to addressing generational differences

 

According to a survey conducted by Pitney Bowes Inc., about 20% of the workplace population reports to a younger supervisor. Because each generation has unique characteristics, it pays to know your generational audience. Here are a few tips:

  1. Emphasize the strengths of each generation and instill these values into the workplace.
    • Baby Boomers tend to thrive on individualism
    • Gen Xers are drawn to entrepreneurialism
    • Millennials have an affinity for teamwork

  2. Consider communications channel preferences.
    • Baby Boomers are most familiar and comfortable with email
    • Gen Xers are savvy with most forms of technology
    • Millennials prefer texting or instant messaging, rather than talking
