| FYI Dionysus Theatre |
 |
The Dionysus Theatre in Houston, Texas is a not-for-profit organization that brings the on-stage experience to those with and without disabilities through professional productions, a touring diversity troupe and theatre arts classes. Diversity! in the Workplace interviewed founder Deborah Nowinski.
The Dionysus Theatre was created in 1997 in memory of your son. In what way were you inspired by Dustin to undertake this project?
Dustin was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 13. For two and a half years, he battled this insidious cancer. Sadly, he also had to battle stereotypes and fear that people have towards those who are terminally ill or disabled. Although he was still a son, brother, loyal friend, witty, intelligent and talented, some labelled him “Dustin, the cancer boy.” He educated so many who came into his life. He was strong and had dignity. Prior to his passing away, he told me that I shouldn’t get angry at people, (and) that I should “look beyond the labels and educate to the soul because some people’s souls haven’t evolved.” This is truly the cornerstone of Dionysus Theatre: To educate and also, of course, entertain. People who come into Dionysus come as they are—either disabled or non-disabled. We educate and look to the souls, not the disability...

Canada
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank have released their first global report on persons with disabilities that reveals more than one billion people experience some form of disability and almost one-fifth of those encounter significant difficulties such as lower educational achievements, fewer economic opportunities and higher rates of poverty than people without disabilities. | POV Managing Expectations |
 |
| When it comes to suitable careers, I think that the trick here is to ensure that expectations are well managed on both sides of the fence. Nothing could be more frustrating and disappointing when expectations are not met by both sides. That is, when employers and their blind and sight impaired employees fail to discuss expectations before hand. This has been the case ever since I started my working career and with technology playing more and more of a major role in the workplace, expectations need to be managed more carefully and intelligently...[ read more ] |

Diversity more than skin deep
BY BONNIE A. SANDMAN PHD. |
| |
Since World War II and the civil rights movement, there have been rather significant changes in the demographics of the work force. And more change is coming.
According to the conservative think tank the Hudson Institute, by 2020 white non-Hispanics will be 68 percent of the work force compared with 76 percent in 1995. In 2020, women will comprise 50 percent of the work force, Hispanics 14 percent, African Americans 11 percent and Asian Americans 6 percent. In general, women and minority representation will continue to increase until the work force will be more representative of those groups in the population... [ read more ] |
