| VIP Cameco |
 |
It only makes sense, considering where Cameco is and what it does, that its recruitment and retention strategy would focus on the very best people for the job: Aboriginals. And that strategy has proven to be a literal gold mine for one of the world’s largest uranium miners.
Headquartered in northern Saskatchewan, the province with one of the highest aboriginal populations in Canada, Cameco decided at the start to give back to the communities where they operate, to buy services and supplies from them, and to provide employment to them. In other words, as Kaylynn Schroeder, Cameco’s VP or Human Resources says, to ensure “the impact in those communities is a positive one.”
And it’s worked...[ read more ] |

Canada
As of July 1, public servants will have to pay market parking rates—in some cases more than $300 per month—in any government-owned building or lot. As a result, workers with mobility issues and no access to other forms of transportation will have no choice but to drive and park their cars. “All government departments have an obligation to accommodate workers with disabilities,” said John Gordon, national president for the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). “We believe that people with disabilities who require designated parking should not be charged a fee for their parking.” PSAC is demanding federal employees with disabilities continue to be accommodated without any additional costs or unnecessary barriers...

Electronic formats were just starting to make their presence known. Today, things are much better when it comes to the availability of manuals in alternate formats but there is still much work to be done.
What do I mean by having manuals in alternate formats? ...[ read more ] |

Ask a Consultant
BY EVELINA SILVEIRA |

Dear Diversity@Work:
I am finding that the morale in my organization is really “going down the tubes.” Employees are claiming that there is reverse discrimination, because they say that there is a double standard when it comes to disciplinary action, lay-offs and constructive feedback. The managers who report to me have indicated that they are afraid to approach some members of their departments who are visible minorities or who have disabilities because they are not meeting the performance expectations. They are concerned about retaliation, complaints about discrimination and lawsuits. Let’s be clear, we are talking about a few people. We do not want to tarnish our relationships with existing employees who fit into these groups who are hard-working employees. But we can no longer tolerate poor performers and we need to send a message out before we lose the people who do do a good job and before we have to close down shop.
