Federal government to women: Go home!
BY IAN SUTTON

We’re now well into the 21st Century. And, still, women at lower income levels – at least 40 percent of them living below the poverty line – continue to be pushed backwards in Canadian society. That’s thanks in large part to deliberate policies and strategies of the federal government, says the head of a national women’s advocacy research organization. And the current economic climate just makes their situation all the worse.

Whatever gains women have achieved in breaking ‘the glass ceiling’ in private, public and political sectors, are failing to accomplish anything significant for their sisters, who are subsisting and caring for family members on poverty-level incomes, says Jane Stinson, president of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women...[ read more ]

10:1  Louise Fréchette

In 2008 Louise Fréchette was given the UNIFEM Canada Award for her outstanding contributions to the advancement of women. The list of ‘firsts’ attached to her name is nothing short of impressive. She was the first female deputy minister at the Department of National Defence, the first female Canadian ambassador to the United Nations, as well as its first Deputy Secretary General and the first woman to hold that position. Fréchette is currently a distinguished fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo...[ read more ]

The military is recommending Prince Harry take a refresher course in equality and diversity after he referred to fellow officer Ahmed Raza Khan in a home movie as his “little Paki friend.” The prince apologized for the remarks. Known as Lieutenant Wales, Harry serves with the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry. He is also on a two-year training program with the Army Air Corps to become a pilot...[ read more ]
VIP Halifax Regional Fire & Safety Service
In the late 1990s, Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service decided to jump on the human rights and employment equity bandwagon and brought in an outside educator to bring everyone up to speed. Everyone except the women, that is.

According to Nadya-Lyse Paré, one of only two female firefighters at the time, her boss told her, “We were women, so we didn’t need to go because we were born diverse.” So everything Paré learned about those classes was second-hand.

“All that I knew was that usually it was worse after. There would be a backlash,” she said, adding “We even had some instructors walk out halfway through. They quit. They couldn’t handle the firefighters.” ..[ read more ]

POV  Hiring Foreign Workers…permanently
BY JILLIAN MOOD
My past few articles have discussed information and services for Canadian employers hiring temporary workers. However, many employers I deal with are interested in permanent workers and keeping that turnover rate low.  Depending on how quickly you need workers there are various options for both you, and the lucky candidates.... Equality and Diversity: Buy-in is the key
BY GEMMA MIDDLETON

‘Equality’ and ‘diversity’ are two words that are regularly mentioned in the business media, which is of no great surprise when you look at today’s society. Due to our diverse culture the protection of minority groups has been high on the government’s agenda, which has led to organizations investing in equality and diversity training.

Although many organizations have invested in equality and diversity training, a recent survey conducted by the Ethnic Minority Foundation charity revealed that almost nine in 10 recent graduates have experienced some kind of discrimination at work. The findings of the report were also supported by another survey, this time conducted by Milkround.com, which interviewed 200 graduates and found that 86%... [ read more ]
