Disabilities and the skilled trades
BY IAN SUTTON |
 |
Creating opportunities for employment of those with disabilities works not only to the advantage of those workers, but also for employers at a time when there’s a growing demand for skills in the Canadian workplace.
That’s the focus and goal of a major new report on workplace accommodation produced by the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF). And identifying more of those best practices that many enlightened employers are already using is the next step in that process, says Allison Rougeau, CAF executive director.
“There are some very good and interesting examples,” she told Diversity!, “but there’s still a huge opportunity to find ways to connect and find greater win-win strategies and more win-win opportunities.”...[ read more ] |

| VIP Frito Lay Canada |
 |
Every organization has its so-called humble beginnings. In the case of Frito Lay Canada, it started with a young farmer messing around in his mother’s kitchen and presto! the potato chip was born. Now 75 years and 5000 employees later, Frito Lay’s story is bigger, much bigger, than its successful entry into the snack food business.
“We operate in a very diverse landscape,” Maria Escobar, Frito Lay’s diversity and inclusion manager points out. “For us it is very compelling that by understanding differences, we are better prepared to serve our customers.”
Frito Lay Canada is a national operation, spanning the country from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, BC. And so getting the message out to and, more importantly, getting buy-in from a diverse workforce is a major challenge...[ read more ] |

| POV The Life and Times of a Disabled Job Seeker |
 |
At the best of times, job seeking can be one of the most tedious, frustrating, and nerve racking processes but for a disabled person it can be doubly difficult.
It does not matter whether the economy is good or bad, the trials and difficulties for a disabled job seeker remain the same. The excuses are the same, the reasons for rejection of disabled applicants continue to be the same, and the unemployment statistics continue to hover over the 80%mark. At least, that is the statistic that we hear when it comes to North America but for the rest of the world...

Ask a consultant
BY EVELINA SILVEIRA |

Dear Diversity@Work:
Like many other organizations, we are facing a big financial hit with this recession. My boss says that we need to scale down and that means that we are going to get rid of some of our diversity initiatives to cut costs. I am concerned that all of our hard work will be shelved, and soon be forgotten. What do you think we should do?

Dear Strapped:
During these rough economic times, it does make good business sense to evaluate our practices. Senior business leaders advise that businesses that become innovative are those... [ read more ] |

Generational Conflict in the Workplace
BY MARILYN VAN NORMAN |
| |
I was asked by the CERIC Research Committee to do a literature search on ‘Generational Conflict in the Workplace,’ as it was an area identified through a Contact Point survey as a topic of research interest. After doing the search both the committee and I were stunned by the amount of research that actually has been conducted and the number of books and articles written on this topic.
I have listed several references following this article but a much more comprehensive bibliography can be found on-line at Contact Point.
Clearly, the multi-generational workforce and its implications are of interest to many. Who makes up this mix and how do they actually differ from each other? What, if any, are the conflicts? I will try in this article to summarize what I learned in doing the search. It should be noted that in exploring this topic... [ read more ] |
