Got a job? Come to Canada!
A guarantee of employment for newcomers is the most effective and fairest way Canada can meet its labour force needs. That’s the view of the national association representing certified immigration consultants in Canada.

Changes in how Ottawa plans to process immigration applications, approved by the last Parliament, continue to remain controversial in view of the federal election. And that’s not solely among opposition parties – at least two of which say they’d repeal changes in the immigration application process if they’re elected or have more clout in a new minority Parliament. ... [ read more ]

The Toronto chapter of the NBMBAA is not an overnight success story. It took 3 years of “perseverance” before the “very American-focused” parent organization took notice of “this small Canadian contingent” or, as it likes to call itself, ‘The Core Four’: Headley Bent, Rose Campbell, Ivan Francis and Damon Knights. “It took a lot of effort,” Knights, president of the Toronto chapter, says. “But as of April, they heard our cry, so to speak, and then the (US) board of directors approved the first international chapter to be launched.”.... What do you do once you’ve won just about every possible workplace award there is? According to Annika Lofstrand, manager of workplace planning and diversity for Vancity, their wins have presented them with an opportunity “to acknowledge where we want to do better.”

Lofstrand has been seconded to the job she’s in. She wanted it. And surprisingly, the organization agreed.

“They said, you know what, we’re short on resources but here, put your head into this because we believe in it, even though we’re receiving these awards and we know we probably could go ‘status quo’ but we’re not going to,” she says. “Put a mirror up and tell us what you see. And let’s see what we can do.”...[ read more ]

POV  Diversity: political correctness at its worse | BY BILL CREWS
Diversity is like Weight Watchers: You pick one dish from each category for a well-balanced diet. But while that might be fine for the waistline and nutrition, force-feeding can be dangerous to our civic health.

I'm not talking about the magnificent melting-pot stew created by immigrants who, through the generations, layered their own rich experiences over the bedrock of American principles. That's an undisputable source of our strength.

I'm referring to something newer and more insidious, something that values tolerance over unity and gives inordinate importance to color, creed, gender and sexual orientation. I like to call it "diversity by design."

Dear Diversity@Work:
My organization seems to be doing a good job of hiring different kinds of people.  We have hired people from different ethnic backgrounds, women and people with disabilities, and Aboriginal people. I think that we are taking a leadership role, but the problem is that these people are not staying, and the other problem is that the other people that were there before don’t appreciate having these new people around.  It seems like things are worse than before.  I had good intentions and they just seemed to go haywire.
Haywire in Halton.... [ read more ]
Working with diversity means finding commonality | BY DAVID WHITFIELD
My very first consulting job was with an international bank in Frankfurt, Germany, with 44 different nationalities among its staff. After getting advice from one of my former students who worked there, the senior bank officer called me on a Friday afternoon and asked how they could manage or work with that amount of diversity. After we hung up, I made a cup of Jacobs Kronung, strong German coffee, and sat up for hours doodling, thinking and trying to figure out how to help this bank with its diversity concerns.

Having taught human relations in organizations, I thought of potential differences among the nationalities, intra-group differences, differences in age groups, etc.

Sometime between midnight and 2 a.m., I had an apocalyptic moment: I thought of.... [ read more ]

"Employees in the 21st century must be able to put themselves in somebody else's shoes. If they have clients from a different culture or who speak a different language, there is no longer any excuse for ignorance."
