The 2009 LATINA Style 50 Report has been released with its list of 50 Best Companies for Latinas to Work for in the US. The evaluation is based on opportunities for career advancement for Latinas such as mentoring programs, women’s issues, affinity groups and Hispanic relations. More than 800 of America’s most prominent corporations were surveyed. Healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente was named company of the year. The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) has given its 2009 Award for Outstanding Service to the Outside Counsel Management at Wal-Mart. The award will be received this month by Joe West for “his significant and ongoing commitment to diversity in the legal profession.”
BusinessWeek magazine has named Aramark as one of the Best Places to Launch a Career for its programs and policies in the area of workplace diversity. Aramark provides food services, facilities management and uniform services for hospitals, universities, schools, and other organizations.
Colorado State University has been given a national award by Minority Access, Inc. as a “role model institution for diversity.” CSU promotes a diverse academic environment and offers a variety of classes, organizations and campus-wide events that promote minority-majority relations.
Hispanic Business has compiled its Diversity Elite 2009. More than 32 variables are considered to measure a company's commitment to Hispanic hiring, promotion, marketing, philanthropy, and supplier diversity. The final directory lists the top 60 companies. The Hospice Care Network has been recognized for having had an impact on more than 13,000 Asian and Hispanic patients and families in borough of Queens, New York. State Assemblyman Jose Peralta presented the organization with a proclamation for its work in the area of hospice awareness.
The Manship School of Mass Communication received the inaugural Diversity and Equity Award from the Association for Education and Journalism in Mass Communication (AEJMC) for increasing diversity in the faculty and student body, improving diversity in its curriculum and instituting diversity programs such as its Forum on Media Diversity website, www.MediaDiversityForum.lsu.edu.
The Minority Business Champion of Connecticut Award for 2009 has gone to Kevin Kelleher, president and CEO of Cartus, the human resource outsourcing relocation company. The US Small Business Administration acknowledged Kelleher for his dedication to “assist minority business owners to grow and thrive.”
Dow Brasil has been officially recognized by the Sro Paulo State Government for its efforts to promote diversity among its workforce. "Respect for people and integrity are core values that drive Dow to create a culture that nurtures inclusion and diversity," says Lia Azevedo, HR director for Dow in Latin America.
American Airlines was the only airline honored this year for Excellence in Diversity Innovations by Profiles in Diversity Journal. The magazine highlighted American’s innovative approach to diversity over the past 2 years, in particular its efforts to influence and improve diversity in management and recruitment.
Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. has achieved an unassisted triple play, bringing home 3 awards from last month’s National Annual Asian Entrepreneur of the Year Awards ceremony. Asian Enterprise magazine recognized the casino resort with its Corporate Advocate Award and its Best Companies for Asian Pacific Americans Award, and presented Harrah’s Chief Diversity Officer Fred Keeton with the Special Advocate Award.
DRI, the Voice of the Defense Bar, has named Womble Carlyle the 2009 winner of the Law Firm Diversity Award. On receiving the award, Brent Clinkscale, chair of the firm’s diversity committee, said, “We don’t strive for diversity to win awards. We do so because it is the right thing to do.”
