Sweden
Ikea publishes what it preaches. The theme of this year’s catalogue is 'mångfald' or diversity. Little wonder. In Sweden alone, employees represent 44 different languages. CEO Jeanette Söderberg explained Ikea’s rationale by saying, “The diversity around us today isn't just good, it is fantastic, giving more creativity and new points of view regarding our existence.” 198 million copies of the catalogue are printed throughout the world....[ read more ]
VIP: Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is embarking on a journey of discovery that began last spring when it did a staff diversity audit and found, not really to anyone’s surprise, that the staff population which is overwhelming white did not reflect the student population which is primarily ethnic.

Hamilton, Ontario ranks high in numbers of immigrants and aboriginals in the province. So with the help of the Social Planning Research Council of Hamilton, and a model developed by the Hamilton Police Service, HWDSB, the second largest employer in the city, set about to make big changes in terms of diversifying its staff. MVP diversity champions
The UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) has announced the winner of the UKRC Diversity and Inclusion Award. Cummins, the world’s largest independent manufacturer of diesel engines, was chosen because of its innovative solutions for attracting more female staff into the traditionally white, male-dominated automotive industry. As a result, the number of women in production roles on the shop floor rose from 14 in 2006 to 69 women in 2008...[ read more ]

Diversity is like Weight Watchers: You pick one dish from each category for a well-balanced diet. But while that might be fine for the waistline and nutrition, force-feeding can be dangerous to our civic health.

I'm not talking about the magnificent melting-pot stew created by immigrants who, through the generations, layered their own rich experiences over the bedrock of American principles. That's an undisputable source of our strength.

I'm referring to something newer and more insidious, something that values tolerance over unity and gives inordinate importance to color, creed, gender and sexual orientation. I like to call it "diversity by design."

Creating a diverse workforce that is fair for everyone is a challenge faced by all organizations. It's an even bigger challenge for some industries that are traditionally dominated by white males, such as engineering and surveying.

Lack of diversity, whatever form it takes, can lead to a shortage of skills in any industry.

However, plugging a skills gap is just one way that diversity is good for business. A diverse workforce means you get a much wider range of skills in the business as well as a good mix of attitudes and approaches.There are benefits externally as well.... [ read more ]
